History of Newport

Newport and the surrounding area is without a doubt beautiful, this leaves little wonder why the area has been sort after for the last 2000 years. Because of this we are left with an area with a wonderful heritage and rich in history. Due to the areas position close to the boarders of Wales and England the area is dotted with an abundance of castles. Newport Castle was built in the 14th century, it was constructed on its site to protect and guard the river crossing. Raglan Castle was built in 1430 on the site of a previous small Norman Castle, today there are some remarkable ruins to explore. Caldicot castle was founded by the Norman's and completed by the late 14th century. It was later restored in the Victorian era as a family home, today the castle is well preserved. Caerphilly is perhaps the most impressive castle in Wales it is certainly the biggest, and has played an essential role in Welsh history. There are also many more castles that demand a closer look.

It is not surprising that Newport itself is full of history, as it is here that the River Usk is at its lowest crossing point. This has offered great settlement advantages throughout the ages from Celts to Romans.

Despite all its colorful history it was the Romans who first put Newport on the map. Just 3 miles north east of Newport lies the town Caerleon, here you will find the remains of the Roman fortress of Isca. Isca was one of the principal military bases in Roman Britain, today there is a surprising amount of evidence of the areas Roman past.

Newport is also famous for one of the most important movements in history today, the fight for the right to vote. Newport is renowned for its part in the Chartist Movement, who were largely responsible for democracy as we know it today. It was fighting for this right to vote in 1839 that many lost their lives in the uprising in Westgate Square.
